The purpose of this kit is to improve the appearance of the lower side vents. Compared to the rest of the car – which is very clean and free of frills – this area felt overly complicated yet still undefined. It also didn’t look aggressive at all, which is a shame in the case of an M Performance car. Many people try to solve this by wrapping the area in black to make it less visible, or by adding some aftermarket splitters. But I wanted to do it in a way that could have come from the factory.
UPPER FLAPS
The upper edges of the vents are very subtle – in fact, too subtle. It almost feels like BMW wasn’t sure whether they wanted them there or not. They also don’t align properly with the line from the central vent. It’s close, but the line looks broken. By adding the covers, the design gains a more confident and mature look. The line continues through all the vents, which visually cleans everything up.
LOWER LIP/SPLITTER
The surfaces of the lower lips are indented, which is the opposite of what you’d expect from a sports car. Adding a bit of volume and a “chin” makes it look much sportier. The new lips are angled in a way that catches the light nicely, making them stand out even more. Unlike the original design, the surfaces are now straight rather than curved.
